Project: New Equine Barn
Contractor: Pilbeam
Structural Engineer: The Harris Consultancy
Contract Sum / Type / Period : £486,000 / JCT Intermediate Contract / Six Month Contract
The brief was to design an equine barn in the manner of an American Barn with clerestorey windows at high level. The equine barn comprises loose boxes, hay store, machine room, veterinary + dental facilities, food preparation room / storage area, disabled toliets and administration office. The total area is 540m² with an adjoining sand school / menage of 288m². The barn features automatically controlled clerestorey windows, solar panels for hot water, as well as rain water harvesting for 'grey' water used for the toilets, washing down the centre after mucking out, and hosing down the nearby dog runs. The materials were kept deliberately simple employing a steel framed portal construction, cement fibre roof (also used to avoid excessive 'drumming' noise during rainstorms which frighten horses), timber weather boarding with a brick base, aluminium windows and steel doors for security.
