The project was carried out by Chilton Waters and Stutchbury Architects, prior to merging with Ichthus Architects to form Waterside Architects Ltd in 2008.
The brief was for an office building for the refinement department including a purpose built acoustic listening room.
The concept was to design a two storey, steel framed building with precast concrete first floor and staircases. The design includes large overhanging eaves and a horizontal brise-soleil at first floor level. The brise soleil is supported from two full length lattice steel wind bracing frames. Coupled with this are two, full bay storey height, stainless steel cross braces each side, at the edge of the bracing. This maximises the internal space and window area, generating a particular engineering aesthetic. The brise-soleil and roof shading greatly reduces the air conditioning loads.
