The Client wanted a purpose built workshop designed in order to process honey for their small business, which also needed to incorporate a garden store.
The steeply sloping site meant that the building had to be built into an embankment, incorporating a retaining wall, using a sodium bentonite tanking system to keep out the damp.
The workshop needed to be connected to the circulation of the main house as well as access from the garden, and side path for delivery of the honey by barrow.
External doors needed to have low access sills for this reason, and finishes were kept simple and practical ie. Altro vinyl flooring draining into a floor gulley.
White aluminium was chosen for the doors and windows for robustness and ease of maintenance, with automatically controlled rooflights to bring natural light into the interior.
The architectural forms were kept deliberately simple, with a lean-to roof clad in elastomeric felt in order to keep costs down, and to respect the original house.
The final build price of approx £2,600 per m² was within budget, with the electrical work being carried out by the Client who was a qualified electrician.
